Bilateral Relations Between India and Bosnia & Herzegovina

Posted by Written by Archana Rao Reading Time: 4 minutes

India and Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) share friendly relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1995, both nations have sought to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including economic and bilateral domains. As India and Bosnia prepare to celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, the latest round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) underscores the shared commitment of the two countries to strengthening ties in economic, and technological domains.

In November 2024, India and Bosnia and Herzegovina convened their fourth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Sarajevo, reaffirming the intention to enhance bilateral relations and foster collaboration across diverse sectors.

According to media reports, during the discussions, both nations reviewed the progress made in areas such as political cooperation, trade and investment, science and technology, cultural exchanges, tourism, and youth interaction. The two countries also held talks on regional and global developments of mutual interest, including issues related to multilateral platforms like BRICS, the UN, the EU, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Both sides agreed to hold the next round of consultations in India’s national capital, New Delhi.

Economic and trade cooperation

A Joint Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation (JTEC) was established to foster economic ties. The second and third JTEC meetings took place in 2006 and 2012, respectively. Indian delegations have actively participated in Sarajevo’s Business Forums (2017–2019) and other economic fairs, showcasing opportunities in tourism, education, agriculture, and energy.

Key agreements supporting bilateral trade include:

  1. Trade cooperation agreement (2002)
  2. Bilateral investment promotion and protection agreement (2006)
  3. MoU between India’s Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH (2013)

Investments and business opportunities

Indian-origin investments in BiH total to around US$250 million, including:

  • Global Ispat Koksana Industrija (GIKIL): A US$10 million investment in a coke and fertilizer plant (now under local management).
  • ArcelorMittal: US$200 million in a steel mill and mining sites, employing around 2,000 people.

BiH also presents business opportunities for India in other sectors like automobile components, hydro-energy, food processing, tourism, and pharmaceuticals. The country’s expectation to join the European Union enhances its appeal as a manufacturing base for Indian companies.
