Global brand IKEA has announced its plans to adopt electric vehicles for its logistics operations in India. In a media interview, the Swedish brand’s India representative said that the company has pledged to achieve 100 percent electric delivery vehicles pan-India by next year.

EV logistics in Ikea delivery fleet

Swedish furniture giant Ikea has said that it is advancing its sustainability efforts in India through significant strides in electric vehicle (EV) adoption for its logistics operations. The company has reportedly pledged to achieve 100 percent electric delivery vehicles by 2025 across the country, with current operations already achieving an 88-90 percent transition to electric logistics.

As per a media report, an IKEA India representative has reaffirmed the company’s decision to adopt EVs in India while expanding its foothold in new regions in the country. Ikea operates four outlets across India, handling substantial delivery volumes across 62 markets.

Sustainability goals and achievements

In 2017, the company joined the Climate Group’s Global EV100 initiative, aiming for 100 percent electric logistics by 2025 across multiple countries. The company began its EV adoption in India in 2018.

The company has said that India has become a global leader in IKEA’s EV transition, surpassing China in terms of EV adoption. While IKEA’s global average EV share stands at 37 percent, in India it has integrated EV use by 88-90 percent. In cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, IKEA has reportedly reached 100 percent electric vehicle logistics.

Strategic collaborations for sustainability

IKEA India further added that it collaborated with several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), aggregators, and last-mile service providers for the move to adopt EV vehicles for its logistics operations. The company has also reportedly formed a team of Zero Emission Delivery (ZED) experts who work closely with manufacturers to rigorously test and evaluate vehicles, charging infrastructure, and emerging technologies. Only after thorough research does Ikea onboard specific OEMs and aggregators.

For three-wheelers, IKEA India has partnered with Bengaluru-based EV company Altigreen, while four-wheelers and trucks are provided by companies such as Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland.

On August 27, 2024, the company announced its partnership with EKA Mobility, a commercial electric vehicle manufacturer in India. This collaboration is expected to add more electric vans to IKEA India, which will be operational across the country.

Global brands in India make collaborative efforts toward electrifying delivery fleets

In August 2024, Susanne Pulverer, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA India, underscored the company’s growing focus on incorporating a sustainable value chain into its business expansion strategy.

IKEA India first began using EVs for logistics operations in 2019, starting with three-wheeled tuk-tuks for smaller deliveries. Over time, the company expanded its fleet by adding retrofitted trucks for larger furniture deliveries and investing in creating in-house charging infrastructure.

Other major companies are also ramping up their EV commitments in India. Amazon India plans to add 10,000 EVs to its logistics fleet by 2025. Similarly, Zomato aims to transition its entire delivery fleet to electric vehicles by 2030, and Uber has announced plans to introduce 25,000 EVs by 2026 as part of its “Uber Green” initiative.
